In chapter fifteen, the reader becomes more informed about the author, Jon Krakauer, and his similarities to Chris McCandless. To start, Krakauer and Chris both did not have a close relationship with their fathers. Walt McCandless and Lewis Krakauer set high expectations for their sons. Also, failure was not an option for them. Therefore, their fathers stressed that life is a competition, and that one needs to compete to be the best. For their sons to be successful, Walt and Lewis pushed Jon and Chris to get a better education by attending college. Because their fathers' controlling nature, they both use the wild as a place to escape from reality. Also, like Chris, Jon Krakauer decided to go to Alaska to escape from society. Krakauer believed that climbing Devils Thumb would fix everything that was wrong in his life. However, it did not change anything. Chris’s experiences and similarity to Jon have personally impacted Krakauer’s life. Krakauer takes Chris's death to heart and realizes that he was lucky to have made it back from Alaska.
